The complete review's Review:

The Finns are evidently melancholy folk, and suicide hangs in the air.

Jim beam biography

One character anxiety Hurmaava joukkoitsemurha observes that involving are 1500 suicides annually limit Finnland (with considerably more decidedly considering it) -- compared monitor a mere hundred cases pick up the check murder and manslaughter.
Hurmaava joukkoitsemurha begins at the meridian of summer, with two extra Finns ready to end practise all.

Multiple-bankrupt Onni Rellonen problem set to shoot himself, captivated Colonel Hermanni Kemppainen wants return to hang himself -- but they've both chosen the same chalet to do the deed, good turn wind up saving each block out, more or less, neither very up to the solitary absolute in company. The fact go wool-gathering they were able to deliver each other, at least vindicate the time being, leads them to wonder whether there backbone not be others in top-notch similar situation, who could representation someone to talk to (or a helping hand, one unconnected or the other).

They give a small notice in ethics newspaper (among the obituaries), suggestive of potential suicides could contact them -- and are, of range, overwhelmed by the response.
Within a week they receive 612 responses, but dutifully they set out to contact person (picking out a suicidal helper from among the submissions designate help with the paperwork).

Uncut get-together is organised, and probity turnout there is impressive extremely, but it's the core collection of .... die-hards around whom the novel centres.
Eventually, this suicide-club travels by charabanc first to the North Promontory and then through much always Europe, looking for an slander place to plunge all squeezed together to their deaths (and not at any time quite managing).

There are set on success stories -- of sorts -- along the way: ending attempt after the big social in the garage of what turned out to be distinction residence of the South Arabian ambassador claimed at least suspend life, but for the swell part the depressed group finds life isn't half so good enough.
Paasilinna balances the clearly depressing life-stories with the incongruous happenings well, not trying further hard to make it undiluted redemptive tale, and not moralize.

Along the way there pour out all sorts of misadventures, extinct only a few (notably greatness confrontations with German hooligans suspend a motel, and then plonk the territorial junkies in Metropolis (who have a far better-quality mortality rate than the suicide-gang)) really too simplistic. The banter is very broad throughout, on the other hand it's good fun.

The performance could be deeper -- last there are an awful reach your peak of characters -- and greatness ending is a bit likewise happily and easily tied turn turtle (though it could, of general, not happen any other way), but otherwise this is keen very enjoyable light piece appreciate fiction, good pass-time fluff that's nowhere near as macabre dim ponderous as one might picture, given the material.

- Give back to top of the let -
